Pilgrims Coffee Roasters

Pilgrims coffee roasters are based on Holy Island, Northumberland.

Originally set up in a small yurt in the garden, Andrew began roasting coffee in Northumberland in 2014.

Simply aimed to supply the cafe with delicious, high quality and sustainably sourced coffee.

In 2018 Pilgrims Coffee needed a larger space to keep up with their expanding business, so they re-purposed an old shipping container and created the current home of the Roastery.

Andrew still heads up operations at the roastery and ensures all of the beans are of the highest quality arabica coffee beans.

Their state-of-the-art roaster ensures they bring out the distinctive characteristics of the beans and produce top quality coffee, every time.

As an entire business, they believe it is extremely important and take great pride in sourcing coffee beans from Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance Certified farms.

They always ensure that everyone that handles their coffee beans is well rewarded for their hard work - certification or not!

A fantastic roastery with fantastic morals that transcend all the way from the country the green coffee is sourced, through to the eco-friendly bags they sell the roasted coffee in.

The Origin

The Eratoi coffee from Pilgrims coffee roasters originates from the Letefoho region of East Timor.

Having worked with the members of the Eratoi group for the past 5 years, Pilgrim’s partnership together continues to develop; as the quality of the coffee improves so does the earning potential of their partner farmers.

Eratoi is centrally located in the sub-district of Letefoho, where the coffee and their partner farmers are widely dispersed throughout a large area of land under the watchful eye of Timor-Leste’s most sacred mountain - Mount Ramelau.

At an altitude of 1800masl, the Eratoi member’s coffee forests are all ideally located amongst the cooling shade trees, where the cherries are provided with a good balance of sun and shade, giving them the time needed to grow and mature slowly.

With higher altitude comes marginally cooler temperatures, meaning that the cherries require a little more time to ripen when compared to that of Rotutu, resulting in a slightly later harvest time, allowing for optimum sweetness development prior to harvesting and processing.

With consistent fermentation over a 40 hour period, and slow, methodical drying on raised beds, this allows the beans to develop the bold flavours which are so distinctive of their coffee.

Led by Simao Pedro de Deus and made up of 30 smallholder farmers, the Eratoi group is fast becoming one of their largest groups. With a consistent focus on processing only the best quality cherries, each member takes great pride in processing their own coffee.

All the members hail from generations of coffee farmers so processing speciality coffee has become second nature to them. Working collectively as a united group and supporting each other, you can be sure that the coffee from Eratoi will consistently produce a delicious coffee with bold flavour notes that balance beautifully within your cup.
